How to Connect to Shore Power Safely

Connecting your yacht to shore power correctly is essential for protecting onboard electrical systems, preventing equipment damage, and ensuring the safety of everyone on board.

Upon Arrival #

  1. Turn Off the Shore Power Breaker
    • Ensure the circuit breaker on the dock pedestal is OFF before connecting any shore power cable.
  2. Verify the Power Supply
    • Confirm that the dock receptacle assigned to your vessel matches your yacht’s electrical requirements.
    • Verify the:
      • Voltage
      • Frequency (50Hz or 60Hz)
      • Phase (Single-Phase or Three-Phase)
      • Amperage (50A, 100A, etc.)
  3. Inspect the Shore Power Cable
    • Before connecting, inspect the cable for:
      • Cuts or abrasions
      • Cracked insulation
      • Burn marks
      • Loose or damaged connectors
      • Signs of overheating or corrosion
  4. Inspect the Plug and Receptacle
    • Ensure both the shore power plug and dock receptacle are clean and dry.
    • Salt, moisture, dirt, or corrosion can create high-resistance connections that generate excessive heat.
  5. Connect the Cable
    • Connect the cable securely to the vessel and dock pedestal.
    • If equipped, engage the locking ring or securing collar to prevent accidental disconnection.
  6. Support the Cable
    • Route and secure the cable so it cannot fall into the water if it becomes disconnected.
    • Avoid sharp bends, pinch points, or areas where the cable could be stepped on or driven over.
  7. Energize the Circuit
    • Once all connections are secure, switch the dock pedestal breaker ON.
    • Verify proper voltage and polarity using the vessel’s electrical monitoring system before placing heavy electrical loads online.

Before Departure #

  1. Turn Off the Shore Power Breaker
    • Always switch the dock pedestal breaker OFF before disconnecting the shore power cable.
  2. Disconnect the Cable
    • Remove the cable carefully without placing stress on the connectors.
  3. Replace Protective Covers
    • Reinstall all weatherproof covers on the vessel’s shore power inlet and the dock receptacle.
  4. Store the Cable Properly
    • Coil the cable neatly.
    • Store it in a clean, dry location protected from:
      • Direct sunlight
      • Saltwater exposure
      • Sharp objects
      • Heavy equipment

Inspect Before Every Use #

  • Examine the entire cable for wear or damage before each connection.
  • Replace damaged cables immediately.

Monitor for Heat Damage #

Regularly inspect:

  • Shore power plugs
  • Dock receptacles
  • Vessel inlets

Signs of overheating include:

  • Darkened or discolored metal contacts
  • Blue, purple, or rainbow-colored heat staining
  • Melted or distorted plastic
  • Burn marks or unusual odors

These conditions indicate poor electrical contact and should be corrected before further use.

Prevent Cable Overheating #

  • Always fully uncoil shore power cables before use.
  • Coiled cables cannot dissipate heat effectively and may overheat under heavy electrical loads.

Keep Connections Clean #

  • Keep plugs and receptacles free from moisture, salt, dirt, and corrosion.
  • Apply a marine-approved electrical contact cleaner or dielectric grease (only if recommended by the connector manufacturer).

One Vessel Per Outlet #

Never connect more than one vessel to a single shore power outlet. Overloading a pedestal can result in overheating, nuisance breaker trips, or damage to marina electrical infrastructure.

Verify Electrical Compatibility #

Using incorrect voltage, frequency, or phase can cause severe damage to onboard electrical equipment. If you are uncertain, consult the marina or a qualified marine electrician before energizing the system.

Ocean Alexander Recommendation: Before connecting shore power, ensure all major onboard electrical loads (air conditioning chillers, water heaters, battery chargers, etc.) are switched off whenever practical. After confirming stable shore power, energize loads gradually to reduce inrush current and minimize stress on the shore power connection and vessel electrical system.
