Overview #
The Climma Marine HVAC System is designed to provide reliable heating, cooling, and humidity control throughout the vessel. Like any marine system, proper operation depends on adequate electrical supply, airflow, seawater circulation, and routine maintenance.
Before submitting a warranty claim or requesting service assistance, perform the following basic troubleshooting checks. Many common HVAC issues are caused by simple conditions that can be quickly identified and corrected.
If the issue remains after completing these checks, contact an authorized service provider for further diagnosis.
Unit Does Not Operate #
Check the Circuit Breaker #
Possible Cause: HVAC breaker has tripped.
Action:
- Check the HVAC electrical panel.
- Reset the breaker if it has tripped.
- Verify the system powers back on.
Check Supply Voltage #
Possible Cause: Low electrical supply voltage.
Action:
- Verify voltage at the HVAC electrical box.
- Check voltage between L1 and L2.
- Confirm voltage is within the equipment specifications.
Low voltage can prevent the system from starting or may cause control faults.
Blower Does Not Operate #
Confirm HVAC System Is Turned On #
Possible Cause: Unit is powered but not enabled.
Action:
- Turn the HVAC unit ON from the Climma control panel.
- Confirm the correct operating mode is selected.
Check Control Display #
Possible Cause: No power to the control system.
Action:
- Check whether any display LEDs are illuminated.
- Verify power supply to the HVAC electrical box.
- Inspect associated breakers and connections.
Cooling Performance Is Insufficient #
Verify Operating Mode #
Possible Cause: Incorrect operating mode selected.
Action:
Confirm the control panel is set to:
- COOL Mode
- or AUTO Mode
Verify Temperature Set Point #
Possible Cause: Incorrect thermostat setting.
Action:
- Confirm the desired temperature setting.
- Adjust the set point as required.
Check Fan Speed #
Possible Cause: Insufficient airflow.
Action:
- Increase fan speed.
- Select AUTO Fan Speed mode if available.
Inspect Airflow #
Possible Cause: Restricted air circulation.
Check:
- Supply air outlets.
- Return air grills.
- Air intake areas.
Ensure:
- No objects are blocking airflow.
- Filters are clean.
- Grills are unobstructed.
Check Air Filter #
Possible Cause: Dirty or restricted filter.
Action:
- Clean the air filter.
- Replace the filter if necessary.
A restricted filter can significantly reduce cooling performance.
Compressor Runs Only Briefly #
High Pressure Protection Activation #
Possible Cause: Insufficient seawater flow.
The high-pressure switch may activate when the system cannot properly discharge heat.
Check:
- Seawater strainer.
- Seawater pump operation.
- Seawater flow.
- Cooling circuit restrictions.
Compressor Does Not Operate #
High Pressure Switch Activated #
Possible Cause: HVAC protection shutdown.
Action:
- Turn the HVAC system OFF.
- Inspect the seawater cooling circuit.
- Verify proper seawater flow.
- Restart the system.
“HP” Alarm Appears on Display #
The HP (High Pressure) Alarm indicates the HVAC system has reached a high-pressure safety condition.
Cooling Mode #
The HP alarm indicates:
- The high-pressure switch has activated more than three times.
- Insufficient seawater flow may be preventing proper heat rejection.
Action:
- Turn the system OFF.
- Inspect seawater circulation.
- Check:
- Sea strainer.
- Seawater pump.
- Intake flow.
- Restart the system after correcting the issue.
Heating Mode #
The HP alarm may indicate:
- Insufficient air circulation.
- Freeze protection activation.
- Restricted airflow.
- Insufficient water flow.
Check:
- Air filters.
- Supply and return air grills.
- Fan speed.
- Seawater flow.
Increase fan speed if necessary.
HP Alarm During Spring & Fall Operation #
Reverse-cycle heat pump systems operate differently depending on seawater temperature.
Heat pump operation is most effective in water temperatures above approximately 45°F (7°C). During transitional seasons, higher seawater temperatures can occasionally cause system pressures to exceed safety limits and trigger an HP alarm.
Some Climma controls may not display an HP alarm during heating mode. In these cases, the only indication may be that the compressor stops operating.
Recommended Actions: #
- Increase fan speed while operating in HEAT mode.
- Verify unrestricted airflow.
- Confirm filters are clean.
- Verify seawater circulation.
Seawater Pump Is Not Pumping #
Check Pump Breaker #
Possible Cause: Pump breaker has tripped.
Action:
- Check the pump breaker (for relay-controlled pump installations).
- Reset breaker after completing inspections.
Pump May Be Air-Bound #
Possible Cause: Air trapped in centrifugal pump head.
If air enters the pump, the pump may stop moving water.
Action:
- Verify seawater intake is open.
- Inspect plumbing connections.
- Purge trapped air from the pump.
- Remove discharge hose if required to allow trapped air to escape.
- Confirm water flow is restored.
Preventative Maintenance Recommendations #
To reduce HVAC issues:
- Clean air filters regularly.
- Inspect seawater strainers frequently.
- Verify seawater flow before peak cooling seasons.
- Maintain proper airflow around vents and returns.
- Monitor HVAC alarms and address them promptly.
- Operate HVAC systems regularly throughout the year.
