Overview #
The MAN Marine Diesel Engine Monitoring and Diagnostic System (MMDS) provides operators and service technicians with the ability to control and monitor engine functions directly from the engine room control station.
This article provides an overview of how to operate your MAN MMDS Local Control Mode, allowing the main engines to be started, monitored, and diagnosed from the engine room control box. This function is especially useful during routine maintenance, troubleshooting, commissioning, and fault diagnosis when access to the vessel’s primary control station may be limited.
The following tutorial is intended to assist Ocean Alexander owners, captains, and crew with understanding the purpose and operation of the MMDS local controls. Always refer to the official MAN operating documentation for complete system information and safety procedures.
When to Use Local Control Mode #
Local Control Mode may be used when:
- Performing routine engine maintenance.
- Diagnosing engine alarms or faults.
- Verifying engine operation directly from the engine room.
- Troubleshooting communication issues between bridge controls and engine systems.
- Testing engine functions during service procedures.
Local operation provides direct control at the engine room station and may override normal wheelhouse control functions.
Pro Tip – Engine Start Lock-Out Condition #
If the Pilot House engine controls are unavailable, or the engines will not start due to a “Lock-Out” condition, verify the operating mode of the main MMDS control system.
The engine may be set to:
Local Operation Mode
When the MMDS is in Local Control Mode:
- Engine commands from the Pilot House may be disabled.
- Engine starts may only be available from the engine room control station.
- Normal bridge operation will not resume until control is returned to the appropriate operating mode.
Before troubleshooting additional faults, confirm the MMDS control mode and verify that control has been returned to the desired operating station.
Safety Notice #
WARNING
Local engine control should only be operated by trained personnel familiar with MAN marine propulsion systems. Ensure the engine room is clear of personnel, tools, and loose equipment before starting engines from the local control station.
IMPORTANT
Always return the MMDS to normal operating control after completing maintenance or troubleshooting. Leaving the system in Local Mode may prevent normal vessel operation from the Pilot House.
