Seacock Maintenance – Your First Line of Defense Against Water Ingress

Seacocks are among the most important safety components on your yacht. These valves control seawater entering and leaving the vessel through below-waterline openings for systems such as engine cooling, generators, air conditioning, heads, sinks, and other onboard equipment.

When properly maintained, seacocks provide years of reliable service. However, if neglected, they can seize, leak, or fail—potentially allowing uncontrolled water ingress into the vessel.

Routine inspection and operation of every seacock should be part of your regular maintenance program.


What Is a Seacock? #

A seacock is a marine-grade valve attached to a through-hull fitting that allows seawater to flow into or out of the vessel.

Common applications include:

  • Main engine raw water intakes
  • Generator cooling water
  • Air conditioning seawater systems
  • Watermaker intakes
  • Head (toilet) intake and discharge
  • Sink and shower drains
  • Cockpit and deck drains

  • Replace worn hoses or corroded clamps.
  • Look for signs of dezincification or corrosion on bronze fittings.

If a seacock shows excessive wear, leakage, corrosion, or will not operate properly, replacement is recommended before the vessel returns to the water.


Before Leaving the Yacht Unattended #

Whenever practical, close all unnecessary seacocks before leaving the vessel unattended for extended periods.

This simple step can significantly reduce the risk of flooding should a hose or fitting fail while no one is aboard.

Always leave open only those valves required for equipment that must remain in operation, such as approved air conditioning or other systems specifically intended to run while unattended.
