Overview #
The Garmin VHF Radio System installed on Ocean Alexander yachts includes an integrated Hailer Function that allows the operator to use the vessel’s VHF transceiver and connected hailer speaker for onboard communication and sound signaling.
The hailer function is useful for communicating with crew on deck, assisting with docking operations, making announcements, and providing audible signals when maneuvering in areas with limited visibility.

Hailer Function Uses #
The Garmin Hailer feature may be used for:
- Communicating with crew on deck.

- Communicating with personnel near the vessel.
- Producing required sound signals where applicable.
Before Using the Hailer #
Before activating the hailer function:
- Confirm the Garmin VHF radio is powered on.
- Verify the hailer speaker is operational.
- Ensure the correct VHF station is selected.
- Confirm the vessel is operating safely.
- Adjust volume levels appropriately for the operating environment.
Operating the Garmin Hailer #
To use the Garmin VHF as a hailer:
- Access the Garmin VHF Radio Interface.
- Select the Hailer function.
- Confirm the hailer output is active.
- Adjust the hailer volume as required.
- Press and hold the communication control to speak.
- Release the control to listen.
The hailer speaker will broadcast the operator’s voice through the external hailer speaker installed on the vessel.
Returning to Normal VHF Operation #
After completing hailer use:
- Exit the Hailer function.
- Return the VHF radio to the desired communication channel.
- Confirm normal radio operation.
- Verify volume and squelch settings are appropriate.
Troubleshooting #
If the hailer function does not operate:
Verify:
- Garmin VHF radio has power.
- Hailer speaker connections are secure.
- Correct hailer output is selected.
- Volume level is adjusted properly.
- Network communication between Garmin devices is active.
- No active radio faults are present.
If communication remains unavailable, inspect the hailer speaker and associated wiring.
