Overview #
The Automatic Identification System (AIS) provides real-time vessel identification and tracking information by displaying AIS-equipped vessels on the Garmin navigation system. AIS targets can provide valuable situational awareness by showing nearby vessel information, including vessel name, position, heading, speed, and other transmitted data.
On Ocean Alexander yachts equipped with the Garmin 8700 Black Box Navigation System, AIS target visibility is controlled through the Hatteland Multi Function Display (MFD) interface.
This article demonstrates how to enable and disable AIS target viewing on the Garmin navigation system using the Hatteland MFD.
Purpose of AIS Target Viewing #
AIS target display can assist operators by providing additional awareness of surrounding traffic, particularly during:
- Coastal cruising.
- Night navigation.
- Reduced visibility conditions.
- High-traffic waterways.
- Harbor approaches and departures.
AIS information should always be used as a supplemental navigation aid and does not replace proper lookout procedures, radar observation, or compliance with navigation rules.
Enabling AIS Targets #
To enable AIS target viewing:
- Access the Garmin navigation display through the Hatteland MFD.
- Open the chart plotter navigation screen.
- Access the chart or navigation layer settings.
- Locate the AIS target display option.
- Toggle AIS targets ON.
- Confirm AIS vessels are displayed on the navigation chart.
Once enabled, AIS-equipped vessels within range should appear as targets on the Garmin chart display.
Disabling AIS Targets #
To temporarily remove AIS targets from the navigation display:
- Access the Garmin chart settings.
- Locate the AIS target display option.
- Toggle AIS targets OFF.
- Confirm the chart display returns to normal without AIS overlays.
AIS can be disabled when additional chart clarity is desired or when troubleshooting navigation display settings.
Troubleshooting AIS Display #
If AIS targets are not visible:
Verify:
- AIS receiver/transceiver has power.
- VHF/AIS antenna connection is secure.
- Garmin network communication is operational.
- AIS targets are enabled in chart settings.
- Vessel traffic is within AIS range.
- The AIS unit is receiving valid GPS position data.
If AIS targets appear intermittently, confirm the AIS device status through the Garmin network or connected electronics equipment.
