MTU Aventics Engine Synchronization – Engage and Disengage Procedure

Overview #

The MTU Aventics Engine Synchronization System allows the operator to synchronize the propulsion engines, enabling both engines to operate at the same RPM from a single throttle control input.

Engine synchronization is designed to improve operator control, provide smoother engine response during cruising conditions, and reduce the need for constant manual throttle adjustments when maintaining steady vessel speed.

This article provides a visual reference demonstrating how to properly engage and disengage engine synchronization using the Aventics control system installed on Ocean Alexander yachts.


When to Use Engine Synchronization #

Engine synchronization is commonly used during:

  • Extended cruising conditions.
  • Stable sea conditions.
  • Long-distance passages.
  • Situations where maintaining consistent engine RPM improves operator comfort and efficiency.

Synchronization is typically not recommended during close-quarter maneuvering, docking, or situations requiring independent engine control.


Engaging Engine Synchronization #

Before engaging synchronization:

  1. Confirm both engines are operating normally.
  2. Verify both throttles are at similar RPM settings or just clutched ahead.
  3. Ensure no active engine alarms or propulsion faults are present.
  4. Confirm vessel operating conditions are appropriate for synchronized operation.

Using the Aventics control station:

  1. Select the Engine Synchronization function.
  2. Confirm synchronization status is active.
  3. Verify both engines respond together to throttle input.
  4. move slave engine into the neutral position.
  5. Monitor engine displays to confirm matching RPM.

Disengaging Engine Synchronization #

To return to independent engine control:

  1. Move both engine’s into the neutral position and Select the Engine Synchronization OFF function.
  2. Confirm synchronization has been released.
  3. Verify each throttle operates independently.
  4. Confirm normal engine control has been restored before maneuvering.

Pro Tip #

If unexpected throttle behavior occurs, such as both engines responding together when independent control is expected, verify that Engine Synchronization has not remained active through the Aventics control system.

Synchronization status should always be confirmed before docking, close-quarter maneuvering, or transitioning between operating modes.
