Overview #
The Side-Power Vector Fin Stabilization System allows individual fin control, enabling operators to disable the fin adjacent to the dock while maintaining Zero Speed Stabilization with the opposite fin.
This feature is intended for situations where the vessel is secured alongside a dock, seawall, or marina berth with limited clearance on one side. Operating a single fin provides continued roll reduction while minimizing the possibility of the dockside fin contacting pilings, docks, fenders, or adjacent vessels.
Important: Single fin operation provides reduced stabilization performance compared to normal two-fin operation but offers a practical solution when operating safely in confined berths.
When to Use Single Fin Operation #
Single fin stabilization is recommended when:
- The vessel is securely moored alongside a dock.
- One stabilizer fin has limited clearance.
- There is a risk of contact with pilings, docks, seawalls, or neighboring vessels.
- Guest comfort is desired while the vessel remains dockside.
Do not use single fin operation if either fin could contact an obstruction during movement.
Before You Begin #
Prior to enabling Zero Speed Stabilization:
- Confirm the vessel is securely moored.
- Ensure hydraulic and electrical power to the stabilizer system is available.
- Verify the stabilizer system has completed its startup sequence and displays Ready.
- Inspect both sides of the vessel for adequate underwater clearance.
- Ensure no swimmers, divers, tenders, or personnel are in the water near the stabilizer fins.
Safety Notice: Stabilizer fins move automatically whenever Zero Speed mode is active. Always verify the surrounding area is clear before enabling the system.
Enabling Single Fin Dockside Stabilization #
Step 1 – Power On the Stabilizer System #
Power on the Side-Power Stabilizer System using the main control display.
Allow the system to complete initialization and verify there are no active alarms.
Step 2 – Select Zero Speed Mode #
From the Home screen, select:
AT ANCHOR (Zero Speed Stabilization)
The system will prepare the stabilizers for roll reduction while the vessel is stationary.
Step 3 – Enable Limited Stroke #
When operating alongside a dock, always select Limited Stroke.
Limited Stroke reduces maximum fin travel, helping prevent excessive fin movement when clearance is limited.
Ocean Alexander recommends using Limited Stroke whenever operating Zero Speed Stabilization in a marina environment.
Step 4 – Disable the Dockside Fin #
Navigate to:
Home → Fins
Select the stabilizer fin nearest the dock and choose:
Disable
Confirm the display indicates:
- Dockside Fin — Disabled
- Opposite Fin — Enabled
The system will now provide stabilization using the remaining fin only.
Step 5 – Monitor System Operation #
Observe vessel motion for several minutes.
During single fin operation you should expect:
- Noticeable reduction in vessel roll.
- Less stabilization than normal two-fin operation.
- Safe fin operation away from dock structures.
If excessive vessel motion occurs due to weather or passing vessel wake, discontinue Zero Speed operation if safe stabilization cannot be maintained.
Returning to Normal Operation #
Before leaving the dock:
- Exit Zero Speed mode.
- Return to the Fins menu.
- Re-enable the disabled fin.
- Confirm both fins indicate Enabled.
- Resume normal stabilization before maneuvering away from the berth.
Failure to re-enable both fins before departure will reduce stabilization performance underway.
Best Practices #
For the safest and most effective dockside operation:
- Always operate the fin farthest from the dock.
- Use Limited Stroke whenever clearance is restricted.
- Inspect the surrounding area before activating Zero Speed mode.
- Never allow mooring lines to pass near operating stabilizer fins.
- Periodically verify fin status on the control display.
- Disable Zero Speed Stabilization during severe storms if fin movement could create a hazard.
Safety Warnings #
WARNING
Never operate a stabilizer fin if there is any possibility of contacting a dock, piling, seawall, another vessel, or any submerged obstruction.
WARNING
Keep all persons clear of the water around the vessel whenever stabilizer fins are enabled. The fins may move automatically without warning.
IMPORTANT
Single fin operation is intended for temporary dockside use only and does not provide the same stabilization performance as normal dual-fin operation.

Operator Tip #
Single Fin Zero Speed Stabilization is an excellent solution when moored alongside a dock with limited clearance. By disabling the dockside fin and operating the outboard fin only, operators can continue reducing vessel roll while protecting the stabilizer system from accidental contact with docks, pilings, and surrounding structures. Always return the system to normal dual-fin operation before departing the berth.
