How to Connect to Shore Power Safely

Connecting your Ocean Alexander vessel to shore power requires careful attention to ensure safe operation of the vessel’s electrical systems and to prevent damage to the yacht, dock facilities, or shore power equipment.

Improper shore power connections can result in electrical faults, overheating, equipment damage, or potentially dangerous conditions. Always follow proper procedures when connecting and disconnecting shore power.


Connecting Shore Power Upon Arrival #

Before connecting your vessel:

  1. Confirm Shore Power Supply
    • Verify the dock pedestal breaker is switched OFF before inserting or removing the shore power connection.
    • Confirm that the available dock power matches your vessel’s electrical requirements, including:
      • Voltage
      • Frequency
      • Phase
      • Amperage rating
  2. Inspect the Shore Power Cable
    • Ensure the shore power cable is in good condition before each use.
    • Inspect for:
      • Cuts, cracks, or exposed wiring.
      • Damaged connectors.
      • Signs of overheating or discoloration.
      • Corrosion on pins, blades, or terminals.
  3. Inspect Connections
    • Ensure both the vessel inlet and dock receptacle are clean, dry, and free of salt, moisture, or debris.
    • Moisture or corrosion inside electrical connections can create a dangerous condition and lead to overheating or electrical failure.
  4. Make the Connection
    • Connect only to the dock receptacle assigned for your vessel and electrical requirements.
    • Never connect multiple vessels to a single shore power outlet.
    • Ensure the cable is positioned securely to prevent it from falling into the water if accidentally disconnected.
  5. Energize the System
    • After the connection is secure, turn ON the dock pedestal breaker.
    • Verify proper operation through the vessel’s electrical monitoring system.

Disconnecting Shore Power Before Departure #

Before leaving the dock:

  1. Switch the dock pedestal breaker OFF.
  2. Disconnect the shore power cable from the dock.
  3. Disconnect the cable from the vessel inlet.
  4. Replace any protective weather covers on the vessel inlet.
  5. Coil and store the cable in a clean, dry location away from:
    • Sharp edges
    • Heat sources
    • Saltwater exposure
    • Areas where the cable may be damaged

Shore Power Cable Maintenance #

Proper cable care is essential for safe operation.

Inspect Before Every Use #

Check for:

  • Cracked insulation.
  • Cuts or abrasion.
  • Loose connectors.
  • Burn marks or discoloration.
  • Corrosion on electrical contacts.

Monitor for Overheating #

Overheating is commonly caused by poor electrical contact due to corrosion, loose connections, or damaged terminals.

Warning signs include:

  • Darkened or discolored metal pins/blades.
  • Multicolored heat patterns on contacts.
  • Melted or distorted plastic around connectors.
  • Burning odors.

Any cable or connector showing signs of heat damage should be removed from service and replaced.


Best Practices #

  • Always fully uncoil shore power cables before use. Coiled cables can retain heat and increase the risk of overheating.
  • Keep electrical connections dry and protected from spray and rain.
  • Never allow shore power cords to remain submerged or exposed to seawater.
  • Store cables properly when not in use.
  • Periodically inspect shore power inlets and connectors for corrosion or signs of overheating.

Important: Shore power systems involve potentially hazardous electrical currents. If any damage, overheating, unusual odors, or electrical faults are observed, disconnect power immediately and have the system inspected by a qualified marine electrician.
