Cutlass Bearings #
When your vessel is hauled for service, a thorough inspection of the running gear is essential to maintaining proper performance, efficiency, and reliability. One of the most critical components to inspect is the cutlass bearing (also known as a shaft bearing), which supports the propeller shaft and allows proper shaft rotation while maintaining alignment.
Proper cutlass bearing condition is essential for minimizing vibration, protecting the shaft system, and preventing premature wear of related components.
Inspecting Cutlass Bearing Wear #
A common question is:
“When should cutlass bearings be replaced?”
Bearing replacement should be determined by measuring the actual clearance between the propeller shaft and the bearing material—not simply by visual inspection.
During haul-out:
- Inspect the bearing for visible wear, cracking, distortion, or deterioration.
- Check shaft movement within the bearing by manually moving the shaft vertically and horizontally.
- Measure bearing clearance using a feeler gauge, dial indicator, or other appropriate measurement tool.
As a general reference, a 2-inch diameter shaft may typically allow approximately 0.010 inches of clearance between the shaft and bearing material. Actual allowable tolerances may vary depending on shaft diameter, vessel speed, bearing manufacturer recommendations, and operating conditions.
Signs That a Cutlass Bearing May Require Replacement #
A cutlass bearing should be evaluated for replacement when:
- Excessive shaft movement is detected.
- Shaft clearance exceeds acceptable tolerances.
- The rubber bearing surface shows significant wear.
- The water lubrication grooves are substantially worn.
- The bearing has lost approximately 50% of the original water groove depth.
- Continuous vibration is present during operation.
A worn bearing can allow excessive shaft movement, leading to:
- Propeller shaft vibration.
- Increased wear on shaft seals.
- Damage to shaft alignment.
- Premature wear of couplings, transmissions, and related running gear components.
Shaft Condition Must Also Be Evaluated #
Replacing the cutlass bearing alone does not always correct the issue.
Over time, the propeller shaft itself may wear in the bearing contact area. A worn shaft can cause a new bearing to have excessive clearance immediately after installation.
Proper repairs may require:
- Shaft measurement and inspection.
- Shaft repair or replacement if wear exceeds acceptable limits.
- Verification of shaft alignment after repairs.
Restoring proper tolerances is essential to achieving smooth operation and preventing recurring vibration issues.
Vessel Speed Considerations #
Higher-speed vessels are generally more sensitive to running gear tolerances. Excessive cutlass bearing clearance can contribute significantly to vibration at cruising speeds.
Lower-speed vessels may tolerate slightly greater clearances; however, all vessels should remain within manufacturer and service specifications.
Shaft Bearing Lubrication #
Cutlass bearings are designed to operate using water lubrication supplied through the bearing grooves.
Important:
- Do not use petroleum-based grease or lubricants on water-lubricated shaft bearings.
- Petroleum products may damage the bearing material and reduce service life.
The recommended water flow rate through a cutlass bearing is approximately:
2 gallons per minute (GPM) per inch of shaft diameter
Proper water flow ensures cooling, lubrication, and removal of debris from the bearing surface.
Running Gear Inspection Recommendations #
During haul-out, inspect:
- Propeller condition and blade integrity.
- Propeller shaft condition.
- Shaft seals and dripless seal systems.
- Shaft couplings.
- Struts and strut bearings.
- Rudder bearings and hardware.
- Alignment and fastener condition.
- Any signs of corrosion or electrolysis.
Owner Best Practices #
- Never operate the vessel with continuous or abnormal vibration.
- Investigate vibration immediately to prevent additional damage.
- Schedule running gear inspections during every haul-out.
- Maintain accurate records of shaft, bearing, and alignment measurements.
Important: Continuous vibration should never be considered normal operation. Early diagnosis can prevent costly repairs to shafts, transmissions, bearings, seals, and other running gear components.
