Sauna Cedar Care and Maintenance

Overview #

If your Ocean Alexander yacht is equipped and commissioned with a sauna, proper care and maintenance are essential to preserve the appearance, cleanliness, and longevity of the cedar wood interior.

Cedar is naturally suited for sauna environments due to its durability, resistance to moisture, and ability to withstand temperature changes. However, regular cleaning and proper ventilation are required to prevent moisture buildup, staining, odors, and potential mold growth.

Following the recommended maintenance procedures below will help maintain the beauty and performance of your yacht’s cedar sauna.

Routine Sauna Maintenance #

Cleaning Frequency #

For saunas used regularly:

  • Perform a light cleaning after each use.
  • Conduct a more thorough cleaning every two weeks under frequent use conditions.
  • At a minimum, complete a full cleaning once per month.

Regular light maintenance will reduce buildup of sweat, oils, dirt, and moisture, making deeper cleanings easier and helping preserve the cedar finish.

After Each Use #

Ventilate the Sauna #

After use:

  1. Turn off the sauna according to the manufacturer’s operating instructions.
  2. Allow the sauna to cool down.
  3. Leave the sauna door open to allow fresh air circulation.
  4. Ensure the interior is allowed to dry completely before closing.

Proper ventilation is critical in preventing excess moisture accumulation, odors, and mold growth.

Wipe Down Interior Surfaces #

After each use:

  • Wipe benches and exposed cedar surfaces with a clean, soft towel.
  • Remove any standing moisture or water spots.
  • Remove used towels from the sauna to prevent bacteria, mildew, or staining.

When using the sauna, always place a clean absorbent towel on seating areas to reduce sweat absorption into the cedar wood.

Deep Cleaning Procedure #

1. Vacuum the Interior #

Before cleaning:

  • Ensure the sauna is cool and dry.
  • Vacuum the cedar surfaces, floors, and corners to remove hair, dirt, and debris.

2. Clean Cedar Surfaces #

Use:

  • A mild cleaner or mild soap solution.
  • A soft cleaning brush.
  • Protective cleaning gloves.

Avoid cleaners containing harsh chemicals, ammonia, or aggressive solvents.

Clean areas where users sit or contact the cedar surfaces to remove sweat residue and prevent staining.

3. Rinse the Interior #

After cleaning:

  • Rinse the interior using fresh water.
  • Remove all cleaning residue.
  • Avoid excessive water saturation of the cedar surfaces.

Allow the sauna to fully dry with the door open and ventilation provided.

Mold and Mildew Inspection #

Regularly inspect the sauna for signs of:

  • Mold growth.
  • Discoloration.
  • Persistent moisture buildup.
  • Unusual odors.

If mold is identified:

  • Treat affected areas promptly using an appropriate cleaning solution.
  • Use a soft brush to clean the affected area.
  • Rinse thoroughly with fresh water.
  • Allow the area to dry completely.

Avoid allowing mold growth to remain untreated, as it can affect both appearance and indoor air quality.

Grates, Drains, and Ventilation Maintenance #

Moisture collection areas require additional attention.

Periodically clean and disinfect:

  • Floor grates.
  • Drain areas.
  • Ventilation openings.

These areas can collect moisture and debris where bacteria or mold may develop.

Whenever possible:

  1. Remove grates or covers.
  2. Clean and disinfect separately.
  3. Rinse thoroughly.
  4. Reinstall once completely clean.

Cedar Bench Maintenance #

Annual Light Sanding #

Once per year, lightly sand cedar benches as needed to remove:

  • Surface stains.
  • Embedded impurities.
  • Minor discoloration from normal use.

Use fine-grit sandpaper and sand gently with the grain of the wood.

Avoid aggressive sanding, as excessive removal of cedar material can affect the appearance and fit of the sauna components.

Floor Cleaning #

Clean sauna floors regularly using:

  • Mild soap and water.
  • A gentle deodorizing cleaner suitable for wood sauna environments.

Avoid:

  • Harsh chemical cleaners.
  • Bleach-based products unless specifically required for mold treatment.
  • Abrasive cleaning methods.

General Use Guidelines #

Shower Before Sauna Use #

Users should shower before entering the sauna.

This reduces:

  • Sweat buildup.
  • Body oils.
  • Dirt and contaminants.
  • Potential staining of cedar surfaces.

Clean Feet Before Entry #

Ensure feet are clean before entering the sauna to reduce the introduction of dirt and contaminants onto the floor.

Use Towels at All Times #

Always use clean towels when using the sauna:

  • Place a towel on benches before sitting.
  • Remove towels immediately after use.
  • Do not leave damp or sweaty towels inside the sauna.

This helps prevent staining, odors, bacteria buildup, and mold formation.

Maintain Proper Ventilation #

After each use:

  • Leave the sauna door open.
  • Allow the interior to air dry completely.
  • Confirm that moisture has dissipated before closing the sauna.

Proper ventilation is one of the most important steps in extending the life of the cedar interior.

Long-Term Care #

Routine cleaning, proper ventilation, and responsible use will help preserve the natural beauty of the cedar sauna aboard your Ocean Alexander yacht.

Maintaining a dry, clean environment will protect the cedar surfaces, reduce maintenance requirements, and ensure years of comfortable operation.
