Routine care and maintenance are important to the life of all fabrics. Clean your fabrics at the beginning of the season, at the end of the season, after parties and clean stains immediately.
The importance of cleaning cushions is vital for their longevity. Outdoor cushions that are not removable can attract dirt, dust, and other debris. Over time, this can lead to the cushion becoming stained or even ripped. For removable cushions, we recommend the removal and storage of cushions inside in-between use to prolong the life of your cushions.
- Consequences of Dirty Outside Cushions
- If you don’t clean your outdoor cushions, they will eventually become stained and discolored. Additionally, the fabric will begin to mildew and break down, leading to deterioration and even rot.
- How to Prevent Cushions from Getting Dirty
- Prevent your cushions from getting too dirty. vacuum them regularly with the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner. You can also spot them with a mild soap and water solution. Be sure to rinse the soap entirely, so it doesn’t leave a residue.
- How to Prevent Cushions from Molding
- Store them in a dry, ventilated place when you’re not using your cushions. If possible, elevate them off the ground and seat boarding so that air can circulate them. Also, check your cushions for signs of mold or mildew periodically. If you see any, clean them immediately.
- Can you Wash Outdoor Cushions?
- Yes, start by vacuuming them with an upholstery attachment to remove any surface dirt or debris; next, spot-clean any particularly soiled areas using a mild detergent and a soft-bristled brush. Once done, it’s time to give the entire cushion a good shampooing.

- We recommend that you first spray off the stain with a garden hose which, often will completely remove a fresh stain.
- Once you have vacuumed the cushions, mix a mild detergent and warm water in a bucket. Dip your sponge or cleaning cloth into the mixture and scrub the cushions. Then rinse them off with clean water. Do this several times to remove all the soap
Basic Stains – Clean with a mild detergent and a soft to medium brush, or an all-purpose cleaner and rinse well with fresh water after cleaning.
Mildew – Use a 4 to 1 mixture of water and ammonia, brushing the stain vigorously to remove the bacteria responsible for the mildew. If the stain remains, briefly apply bleach to the area and rinse with fresh water. Tough Stains or Mildew – Use a mixture of 1 tablespoon of ammonia, 1/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide, and 3/4 cup of distilled water. Briefly, apply to the surface, allowing the peroxide to bubble. Rinse with fresh water.
Frequency of Washing #
That depends on how often you use them and what kind of environment they’re in. If you have kids or pets, or if it rains a lot, you’ll probably need to clean them more often than if you live in a dry climate and don’t use them as much. As a general rule of thumb, aim to clean your outdoor cushions at least once a month.
