Overview #
The Mach 5 Water Pump is designed to provide reliable freshwater delivery throughout the vessel. Proper start-up and priming are essential to ensure correct pump operation, prevent dry-run conditions, and avoid premature wear caused by trapped air within the pump or suction piping.
This procedure provides a safe, repeatable sequence for technicians and crew familiar with basic marine water pump systems.

Before Starting #
Before operating the Mach 5 pump:
Verify:
- Freshwater supply is available.
- Pump electrical supply is ON.
- Suction and discharge plumbing connections are secure.
- No visible leaks are present.
- All fittings are properly tightened.
A loss of prime or air entering the suction side can cause poor performance, false dry-run alarms, or repeated pump shutdowns.
Mach 5 Pump Priming & Start-Up Procedure #
Step 1 – Prime the Pump #
- Locate the pump priming plug.
- Remove the priming plug.
- Fill the pump housing with approximately:
1 gallon (3.75 liters) of clean water
- Reinstall and tighten the priming plug securely.
Ensure the plug seals properly before starting the pump.
Step 2 – Begin Pump Operation #
- Open a freshwater faucet onboard.
- Turn the Mach 5 pump ON.
- Allow the pump to operate.
During initial startup, the pump may recirculate water internally while removing trapped air and completing the priming process.
Step 3 – Confirm Prime #
Allow the pump time to complete the priming process.
If the pump is not fully primed after approximately 6 minutes:
- The pump will shut down.
- The pump will attempt an automatic restart cycle three times.
- If unsuccessful, the pump will remain OFF.
To reset:
Option 1:
- Press the reset button at the control panel.
Option 2:
- Turn pump power OFF.
- Wait briefly.
- Restore power.
Repeat the priming procedure if required.
Step 4 – Verify Pressure Operation #
Once primed:
- Close the open faucet.
- Allow the pump to build system pressure.
- Confirm the pump reaches maximum pressure.
- Verify the pump shuts OFF after approximately 15 seconds.
Shutoff pressure may vary slightly depending on:
- Vessel plumbing arrangement.
- Suction lift requirements.
- System demand.
Technician Tips & Troubleshooting Notes #
Air in the Suction Line #
Air entering the suction piping is one of the most common causes of:
- Erratic pump operation.
- Loss of prime.
- False dry-run shutdowns.
- Extended priming times.
Inspect:
- Suction hose connections.
- Hose clamps.
- Fittings.
- Pump inlet connections.
Even a small suction-side leak may allow air into the system without creating a visible water leak.
Proper Priming Technique #
During initial startup:
- Allow sufficient operating time to remove trapped air.
- Do not repeatedly cycle power before the system has completed priming.
- Verify steady water flow from open faucets.
The pump must remove all entrained air from both the pump housing and suction piping for reliable operation.
Preventative Maintenance Recommendations #
To maintain reliable Mach 5 operation:
- Inspect suction connections regularly.
- Check for leaks or loose fittings.
- Keep pump area clean and dry.
- Verify normal pressure cycling.
- Address repeated dry-run shutdowns promptly.
Important Reminder #
A properly primed pump is critical for freshwater system reliability. Repeated operation without proper prime may result in reduced performance, unnecessary wear, and system faults.
