Ocean Alexander yachts are equipped with premium iCarbon® pop-up cleats integrated into the bulwarks and deck. These flush-mounted cleats provide a clean appearance while maintaining full mooring capability when deployed.
To ensure reliable operation and preserve the manufacturer’s warranty, the cleats require periodic cleaning, inspection, and maintenance. Salt deposits, dirt, and lack of lubrication can affect the smooth operation of the pop-up mechanism over time.
Routine Cleaning #
The cleats should be rinsed with fresh water after exposure to saltwater and cleaned as part of the vessel’s regular wash schedule.
- Rinse the cleat thoroughly with fresh water.
- Remove any sand, salt crystals, dirt, or debris from around the moving components.
- Wash with a mild marine soap using a soft brush or microfiber cloth.
- Rinse thoroughly and dry the assembly.
Avoid allowing dirt or salt to accumulate within the recessed housing.
Operating the Cleat #
- Press the release point or lift the cleat as designed.
- Raise the cleat fully until it locks into the operating position.
- Confirm the cleat is fully deployed before attaching dock lines.
- After use, remove all line tension before folding the cleat back into its recessed position.
- Ensure the cleat is fully seated and flush with the surrounding deck.
Important: Never force the cleat open or closed. If resistance is encountered, inspect and clean the mechanism before applying additional force.
Lubrication #
Periodic lubrication helps ensure smooth operation of the internal mechanism.
Recommended maintenance:
- Apply a light marine-grade corrosion inhibitor or dry-film lubricant to the moving pivot points.
- Wipe away any excess lubricant to prevent dirt accumulation.
- Do not use heavy grease, which may trap dirt and salt.
- Do not allow lubricants to contact adjacent teak, painted, or finished surfaces.
Follow the manufacturer’s recommended lubrication intervals or increase maintenance frequency in harsh saltwater environments.
Routine Inspection #
Inspect each cleat regularly for:
- Smooth deployment and retraction
- Loose mounting fasteners
- Corrosion or discoloration
- Cracked or damaged composite or stainless-steel components
- Salt or debris buildup
- Proper locking in both the open and closed positions
Address any abnormalities promptly to prevent further wear.
Winter Storage and Extended Lay-Up #
Before extended periods of non-use:
- Thoroughly clean each cleat.
- Remove all salt deposits.
- Allow the assembly to dry completely.
- Apply a light protective corrosion inhibitor to the moving components.
- Cycle the cleat several times to distribute the lubricant evenly.
